Hirenkumar Nakawala obtained his medical degree in 2009. After several years of medical experience, treating patients in hospitals, he gradually developed an interest to solve medical problems with the help of engineering techniques. In endeavor to get his goal, he obtained his masters degree in Health Informatics from University of London with a thesis on the needle insertion manipulator for Thoracentesis. He also has a master degree in Information Technology from India. His past experience involves working as a hospital doctor, systems analyst (Health information systems) in National Health Services, UK and an entrepreneur by running his own hospital. He is now enrolled as a PhD student in Bioengineering (computer-assisted surgery) at Neuroengineering and Medical Robotics laboratory at Politecnico di Milano. His research interests include artificial intelligence in computer-assisted surgery, human-robot interaction in surgical robotics, healthcare interoperability, CDSS and intelligent cognitive systems.
